Understanding the Impact of Our Words

Recently, I came across an enlightening post by the talented South African psychologist and speaker, Naomi Holdt. She was taking a break due to “load shedding,” a term that resonated with me as I had just chosen my word for 2023: “unburden,” which signifies letting go of anything or anyone that holds me back. These two ideas seemed to intertwine seamlessly.

It’s common for many of us to feel burdened by our responsibilities. Often, we find ourselves overwhelmed with a long list of tasks, frequently feeling as though our lives revolve around endless obligations.

Language as a Tool for Change

I have always enjoyed experimenting with language, manipulating words and sentence structures until they resonate perfectly. One morning, shortly after reading Naomi’s post, I awoke and began contemplating the myriad of tasks awaiting me that day. The word “have to” echoed in my mind repeatedly, leaving me drained and unenthusiastic before I even slipped into my slippers.

Then, my cats began meowing at the bedroom door, reminding me it was time to feed them. I groaned, feeling the pressure of yet another obligation. But then, I paused.

What if I reframed my perspective on these tasks? Instead of “I have to feed my cats,” I could say, “I get to feed my cats.”

Almost instantly, my mood shifted. Rather than viewing it as yet another burden on my already extensive list, I felt a sense of privilege and gratitude for being able to care for my pets. My love for them transformed this obligation into a joyful responsibility.

The Shift in Perspective

As I considered this shift, I realized that altering my language from “I have to” to “I get to” transformed my experience entirely.

I no longer “have to” clean my home; I get to maintain a tidy and pleasant environment. I no longer “have to” prepare dinner; I get to create a delightful meal. Writing at my office is no longer something I “have to” do; instead, I get to express my thoughts and inspire others through my writing.

The Importance of Self-Dialogue

What we tell ourselves is significant. The way we describe our experiences influences our feelings. Through the power of our words, we can elevate ourselves or plunge into negativity. Perhaps it’s time for us to monitor our speech, heed the language we use, and switch from negative to positive. After all, our perception truly shapes our reality, doesn’t it?

Note: My interpretation of “load shedding” differs from its original context. In South Africa, it refers to scheduled power outages, similar to what we call “rolling blackouts” in California, where utilities cut power to conserve energy or during wildfire season.
