Embracing the Journey of Growth: Why Sucking is Essential

Chapter 1: The Harsh Reality of Beginners
It was just another morning at the gym as I ventured onto the chilly mats. Having only begun my training a few months prior, I found myself repeatedly overwhelmed.
In jiu jitsu, I faced intense pressure, with opponents overwhelming me, making it difficult to breathe, let alone defend myself. It's a primal instinct—fight or flight.
During those initial months, it's tough. There's no denying it. You’ll likely feel lost, embarrassed, and frustrated. However, a crucial realization dawns: every expert was once a novice. It's completely acceptable to be inexperienced at something.
Accepting this truth brings a liberating sense of freedom. I’m thankful that I discovered this early in my adult life through jiu jitsu.
Those who struggle most are often the ones averse to being bad at anything; they fear looking foolish and stepping outside their comfort zone. This mindset can ultimately hinder their progress.
Learning to embrace being a novice is a beautiful experience. You begin to advance with humility, admiring those around you who have already traversed the path you are on. You draw inspiration from those further along in their journey.

Sucking at something can truly expand your perspective. When you’re new to an activity, it forces you to keep an open mind; without this openness, improvement becomes impossible.
Conversely, those who excel often fall into rigid patterns of thought, believing their methods are the only way to succeed.
As you advance, it can be challenging to recall the beginner’s mindset. However, as a novice, every experience is fresh, akin to rediscovering the world as a child.
Your growth stagnates the moment you close yourself off to new ideas.
So, venture forth and embrace the struggle of being a beginner with a smile. Keep returning, and before you know it, you’ll find that your skills have improved, even if just a little.
The momentum from your progress will keep you engaged and motivated.
