Why Effective Transformation Requires Prioritization

Chapter 1: Understanding Transformation Failures
Transformations can often stumble, particularly when leaders overlook the importance of embedding transformation tasks into their teams' backlogs.
This underscores the importance of transformation, whether it's in Agile methodologies, digital initiatives, cloud migrations, or even HR adaptations. Significant effort from all team members is crucial for success.
Consider the analogy of renovating a house. If I aim to revamp my living space, I can't simply continue my daily routines as if nothing is changing. I would either need to vacate the premises to allow for uninterrupted work or significantly adjust my schedule to prioritize the renovation. This might even involve taking leave from my job to ensure the project is completed. Whether I undertake the renovations myself or hire professionals, it requires a dedicated commitment to the task at hand.
This principle directly applies to transformations within an organization. If transformation is vital to you as a leader, your actions must reflect that importance. The tasks associated with the transformation should be positioned prominently in your team’s objectives and backlogs.
It's imperative for those involved in the transformation to allocate the necessary time and energy. I've observed leaders expecting teams to maintain "business as usual" while simultaneously tackling transformation tasks, which can lead to neglect. This mindset must shift.
If you’re engaged in an Agile transformation, yet that work is relegated to a lower priority behind five other tasks, it’s time for introspection. If Agile transformation is ranked sixth in importance, you must question its urgency. If it truly holds significance, why is it not rated higher?
This brings us to the fundamental question of the 'Why' behind any transformation initiative. If the reasoning is compelling and essential, it should be effectively communicated throughout the organization, influencing everyone’s priorities.
For instance, scheduling transformation meetings or training sessions on a Friday afternoon, when many are winding down their week, sends the wrong message. If you want transformation to be taken seriously, consider holding these events on a Monday morning to underscore their significance.
