Understanding the Impact of Mindset on Addiction

The mindset we adopt significantly influences our lives, emotions, and habits. Embracing an open mindset fosters a positive perspective, enabling us to navigate challenges with ease. Conversely, a closed mindset traps us in rigid beliefs, preventing progress and further complicating our situations.

Spiritual teacher Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan emphasizes the importance of an open mindset in overcoming addiction. He advises, "Keep your mind receptive. Listen to various viewpoints at least once. If you disagree after considering them, you can set them aside. If you resonate with certain ideas, hold onto those, even if others seem unhelpful."

A restricted mindset often leads us to believe that addiction is an intrinsic part of who we are, making it seem nearly impossible to overcome. This mindset fosters negative beliefs that reinforce our sense of helplessness, causing us to sink deeper into addiction and obstructing our ability to break free. Our behaviors become intertwined with the addiction, further diminishing our chances of recovery and stifling our positive energies.

To combat this, let’s explore a four-step approach to overcoming addiction with an open mindset:

  1. Acknowledgment: Recognizing addiction as a mistake is crucial; it signifies your desire to change and indicates that it can eventually be overcome.
  2. Learning: Compile a list of how this addiction harms you and others. Discovering its negative impacts can motivate you to resist it more vigorously.
  3. Seeking Forgiveness: This powerful tool aids in overcoming addiction. By sincerely seeking forgiveness from your inner self, you can cleanse past affirmations that supported the addiction and inspire a fresh start. This process, known as Pratikraman, when paired with a strong resolve to resist the habit, lays the foundation for a new beginning.
  4. No Defense: When confronted about your addiction, do not hide or justify it. Acknowledge it as a weakness. As emphasized by Pujya Deepakbhai Desai, accepting our faults is essential for overcoming them. When we stop defending our weaknesses, they begin to diminish and ultimately fade away.

With an open mindset, we can embrace lifelong learning to address our weaknesses, which empowers us to advance in life. Instead of succumbing to despair over our bad habits, this mindset inspires us to rise up and confront challenges until we triumph over them. This is indeed the crucial quality needed for success in overcoming any addiction.
