Chapter 1: Introduction to Free Alternatives

After over a decade of utilizing Adobe Illustrator, I’m excited to introduce you to an amazing alternative.

Adobe Illustrator is undoubtedly a top-tier design tool. Its user-friendly interface, intuitive shortcut keys, and reliable performance make it a favorite among graphic designers. However, the steep price tag can be a significant burden for those transitioning into graphic design, students, or individuals from less affluent backgrounds. As a current psychology student, I find joy in creating designs on the side, but the yearly costs for Adobe licenses can be overwhelming.

In the Netherlands, the Adobe suite costs approximately €250 each year, totaling around €1000 every four years. Imagine what you could do with that extra €1000—perhaps a memorable vacation, countless dinners with loved ones, or other meaningful experiences.

This reality prompted my quest for a suitable alternative to Adobe Illustrator. My criteria for a free substitute were clear:

1. It needed to offer comparable functionalities to Adobe Illustrator, or even better, surpass its capabilities. My clients deserve nothing less.
2. The software had to be completely free. If it weren’t, I would prefer to stick with Adobe Illustrator.
3. It must support AI files, allowing me to open current projects and export files in AI format for compatibility with collaborators.

And guess what? An excellent alternative does exist!

I soon discovered the program I promised to reveal: Inkscape. It has truly surpassed my expectations.

3. File Compatibility: You can effortlessly work with various file types. It allows you to open AI files, manipulate them as vector graphics, and save them in your desired format.
