Rediscovering Running: A Journey from Reluctance to Enjoyment

Chapter 1: A Love-Hate Relationship with Running
Running has always posed a challenge for me. During my childhood, competitive sports often equated running with punishment. Coaches would push us to our limits, creating a mindset that running was something to be endured rather than enjoyed.
After moving on from competitive sports in college, I took a significant break from running altogether. It wasn't until the pandemic that I discovered a newfound appreciation for walking outdoors. This simple activity, which I never actively sought out before, has become my favorite pastime. Regardless of the weather—be it rain, snow, or sunshine—I now cherish my daily walks.
Still, running remained absent from my routine...
However, this year, at 29, something shifted in my perspective. I heard a sports commentator refer to an athlete as "old" after they turned 30. That sparked a realization: if I didn't make a move now, I might never do it. I felt the urge to challenge myself, to explore my athletic capabilities once again, and to experience the thrill of speed.
So, I began to run for the first time in years. The experience was tough—my legs felt heavy, as if I were trudging through mud, and my lungs were constricted. I could feel the warm saliva pooling in my mouth after just a few strides.
With each run, I’ve noticed improvement. The hills feel less daunting, and my sprints are gradually getting faster. I’ve finally come to understand the allure of running. It’s an intense internal competition. The challenge lies in quieting your mind and pushing through.
Running, much like writing, has its ups and downs. There are days when motivation wanes, and everything feels hazy. The beginning can be slow and painful, but if you refuse to give up and keep pushing forward, remarkable transformations occur.
For the first time in my life, I can confidently say... I think I'm beginning to enjoy running.
