In recent years, blockchain technology has become a driving force behind various financial and technological advancements. Decades later, Atari, known for its token and coin-operated machines, is now exploring virtual tokens. The company recently announced two new branches: Atari Gaming and Atari Blockchain, marking a bold step into the world of blockchain technology.

Chapter 2: Atari's Blockchain Vision

In late 2020, Atari introduced its own Atari Token, which operates on the Ethereum blockchain. Prior to establishing its Blockchain Division, Atari unveiled a blockchain-enabled console, the VCS, to complement the token.

CEO Frédéric Chesnais described the VCS as distinct from traditional consoles like PlayStation or Xbox, emphasizing its functionality as a mini-computer designed for home entertainment.

Alongside partners in the crypto-gaming sector, Atari plans to create blockchain-enhanced versions of classic games. The company is also developing collaborations to offer NFT items for in-game use. While platforms like Dapper Labs have utilized blockchain for collectible games, Atari's approach focuses on integrating NFT items within video games.

Atari has also entered the online gambling realm with Ethereum-based crypto-casinos, hinting at a comprehensive strategy before officially launching its Blockchain Division.

Their press release detailed potential applications for the Atari Token, aiming to incorporate it as a payment method for both Atari games and third-party applications. While no new projects were unveiled, this move strengthens Atari's position in the crypto-gaming landscape.

Currently, the blockchain gaming sector lacks many well-established titles. The press release mentioned plans to collaborate with a collectibles marketplace called OpenSea.io, as well as integrating with popular open-world games like Sandbox and Decentraland, both on the Ethereum blockchain.
