According to lead scientists Auriel Willette and Brandon Klinedinst, these evaluations measured the participants' ability to think quickly.
In addition to cognitive testing, participants filled out detailed questionnaires regarding their dietary habits, specifically focusing on the frequency of their consumption of various foods and beverages, including fruits, vegetables, meats, and alcoholic drinks.
Interestingly, while one might assume that a diet high in red meat and processed foods would correlate with greater cognitive decline, the findings revealed four unexpected results.
The first notable outcome was that cheese emerged as a significant protector against cognitive aging, even among older individuals. Secondly, moderate daily consumption of red wine appeared to enhance cognitive performance over time. Of course, excessive alcohol intake is known to have detrimental effects on both the brain and other bodily organs.
The third finding was that lamb, often criticized as an unhealthy choice, was linked to improved intelligence test results among its consumers. The final discovery was not surprising; high salt intake contributed to cognitive decline, particularly in individuals already predisposed to Alzheimer's Disease.
Willette and Klinedinst aspire to conduct randomized clinical trials to further explore whether dietary modifications can lead to notable improvements in brain function.
The researchers echoed a sentiment long-held by many: our dietary choices are crucial for maintaining long-term health. Klinedinst stated, “I believe the right food choices can prevent disease and cognitive decline altogether. Perhaps the silver bullet we're looking for is upgrading how we eat.” This idea resonates with the famous quote from French lawyer Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1826: "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are."
