Overcoming Addiction: A Spiritual and Technical Approach

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Addiction

What drives an individual to repeatedly fail in overcoming their addiction, despite being aware of its detrimental effects? The Enlightened One provides insight:

While it's essential to maintain any medical treatments related to your addiction, there are two significant paths to recovery through the spiritual teachings of Akram Vignan: The Scientific Approach and The Technical Approach. When these methods are combined, they yield the most effective and swift results. However, it's crucial that each person engages with these practices individually; no one can do it on our behalf.

Let’s delve deeper into these two methods…

Section 1.1: The Scientific Approach

The Scientific Approach emphasizes the importance of separating oneself from the worldly identity. At our core, we are pure Souls. Our connection with the physical body is a result of misguided beliefs.

This erroneous perception creates a false sense of oneness with individuals, like John. When John makes a decision, you might think, “I am making that decision.” If John experiences an insult, you feel the sting of that insult yourself. When John struggles with addiction, you internalize it as “I am an addict, and I am failing repeatedly.”

Thus, the root of the problem lies in this faulty belief. Through Gnan-Vidhi, facilitated by the grace of Dada Bhagwan, the Enlightened One aids us in transforming these misconceptions into the truth of our identity, allowing us to discern what is real and what is merely relative.

With this shift in belief, you begin to recognize your separation from John. This marks the initial step in experiencing your true essence as a pure Soul. As you practice the five principles received during Gnan-Vidhi, your awareness will gradually expand, leading you to a deeper understanding of your true self.

When John falters due to addiction, you can objectively observe, "This is John's struggle, not mine." Each mistake is layered; the more complex the issue, the longer it may take to resolve. However, through the lens of Soul awareness, these layers can be shed more quickly. This separation from John represents a scientifically valid way to tackle any error, including addiction, but it requires Self-Realization.

Section 1.2: The Technical Approach

The Technical Approach, as suggested by the Enlightened One, consists of four key steps:

  1. Develop a Strong Conviction: Recognize that addiction is a weakness and resolve firmly that it is not acceptable.
  2. List Pros and Cons: Create a list highlighting the benefits of overcoming addiction and the drawbacks of remaining addicted. This exercise can clarify how harmful addiction can be and motivate you to break free.
  3. Practice Repentance: Despite your best intentions, you may still struggle with addiction due to past affirmations of it. Engage in 'pratikraman'—a heartfelt confession and a commitment to change. Whenever you face a setback, sincerely pray, “Oh God, I have succumbed to this addiction. Please forgive me and grant me the strength to overcome it.”
  4. Avoid Justifying Your Addiction: It’s vital not to defend or protect your addiction. When confronted about your struggles, resist the urge to justify your behavior. Instead, focus on being resolute in your efforts to overcome it.

Combining these four technical steps with the scientific method will enhance your chances of overcoming any form of addiction or weakness you may encounter.

Additionally, consider starting each day with a prayer: “May no living being suffer due to my thoughts, words, or actions.” Maintain this awareness throughout the day, especially when faced with challenges related to your addiction. This practice can significantly alleviate your burdens over time.

The revered Dada Bhagwan emphasizes that regardless of how serious the issue may be, your determination, understanding, and commitment to repentance—along with avoiding the protection of harmful habits—will surely help you overcome them. If you are fortunate enough to achieve Self-realization and remain in the company of the Enlightened One, it will greatly enrich your entire life. Wishing you all the best! 👍

The first video, "How an Addicted Brain Works," delves into the neurological underpinnings of addiction, illustrating the brain's response to substances and how this affects behavior.

The second video, "Why Do Addicts Keep Using If They Know Drugs Are Causing Negative Consequences in Their Lives?" explores the psychological mechanisms that perpetuate addiction despite awareness of its harmful consequences.
