Navigating Sleep Challenges with Autism: Our Journey

Chapter 1: A Sleepless Night
The struggle for sleep seems to be a recurring theme for Owen. Last night, he was awake by two, persistently expressing his desire to go to the pool. This situation is incredibly tough, perhaps one of the most challenging we face. My insistence that it was still the middle of the night and he should return to bed did not sit well with him.
Time ticked on, and soon it was three, four, and five o'clock—no sleep for either of us and a whirlwind of emotions. Eventually, around five, Owen grasped that our plans for the pool were off. I had intended to go out for a comedy show that night, but I was far too exhausted to even consider it, let alone remember my routine.
Self-care often tops the priority list, yet when your sleep patterns are disrupted—especially when juggling someone else’s schedule—rest becomes a rare commodity. I can only hope for a better night’s sleep tonight. Exhaustion doesn’t guarantee that sleep will come.
Once the day began, Owen seemed more settled, although thoughts of returning to school next week were ever-present. He repeatedly inquired about school on Tuesday and whether he would ride the bus. I attempt to guide him to focus on the present day, but it's a monumental challenge when his desire for routine takes precedence. I often reflect on the numerous specialists who have helped him over the years, but he tends to navigate through the exercises in his own unique way.
“School next Tuesday,” he chanted, almost like a mantra. Seeing his friend on Monday brought joy but also a sense of loss, as he missed him dearly. Owen longs for outings with his friend, but they are not always feasible. Hopefully, we can enjoy more time together over the summer.
“Don’t pinch me,” Owen exclaimed suddenly. It's been a while since he's actually pinched me, but those words frequently escape his lips. In his early years, I taught him that we don’t pinch one another, and I also emphasized the importance of picking up food rather than pinching it. Over the years, eating has been a skill we've worked hard to improve. His teacher often reminded him about not crumbling his food, a habit he still struggles with, but recognizing progress, no matter how small, is important.
He expressed a desire to sleep in my bed, but I encouraged him to return to his own. It’s always a bit of a gamble regarding where he’ll sleep more soundly, but he was practically sleepwalking to his bed and fell asleep within minutes. I’m hoping for a restful night for both of us.
Tomorrow, he has therapy, and I made it clear that this was our only plan for the day. I didn’t want him to think we were heading to the pool, though if he sleeps well, I might take him in the morning. He mentioned wanting to go to Dairy Queen with his grandma afterward, so we’ll see how the day unfolds. I’m grateful that he was calm by day’s end, and I truly hope we can re-establish a sleep routine during his break. Through life’s challenges, we learn to cherish our victories more deeply. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how big or small. Sending smiles and sweet moments!

As we navigate these challenges, the significance of routine becomes increasingly clear. Owen's excitement and anxiety about returning to school highlight his need for predictability in his day-to-day life.
