Section 1.1: The Role of Teachers in Our Lives
Lessons often come from unexpected places. For instance, during my time in high school, I encountered challenges that shaped my understanding of love and compassion. My school was so extensive that it was divided into four sub-schools: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. Each had its own dedicated counselor and principal, who guided us throughout our high school years.
Mr. Richardson, my counselor, exemplified what it meant to have an open-door policy. He taught me invaluable lessons about love, grace, and mercy. I spent more time in his office than in any of my classes, and his presence was a soothing balm during turbulent times.
“In the end, everyone is our teacher, on one level or another. The child is our teacher, our friends, our family, the stranger on the street. Every experience is a challenge; a teaching is always hidden in it. Every thought that bubbles up in our minds can teach us things about ourselves, if we are able to listen.” — David A. Cooper
I struggled significantly during high school, despite entering as a straight-A student. The environment was overwhelming, and I faced challenges such as racism that I was unprepared for. My parents, too, were dealing with their own re-entry issues after moving to the United States when I was 14.
Previously, I had thrived in school, surrounded by friends and eager to learn. However, the challenges I faced began to wear me down, and it was Mr. Richardson's unwavering support that helped me through. His simple smile, playful teasing, and serious discussions about my future were precious gifts that provided comfort and guidance.
Since those formative years, I’ve learned to appreciate each day as a unique opportunity, trusting the process and listening to my instincts.
“May you embrace this day, not just as any old day, but as this day. Your day. Held in trust by you, in a singular place, called now.” — Carrie Newcomer
