The Guardian of the Unknown: Preventing Catastrophe Across Realms

Written on

Chapter 1: A Desperate Mission

The heavy clang of the cell door echoed ominously down the stark, white corridor. Pain and remorse clung to the walls, saturating the air with fear. This wasn’t my first visit to death row; being trapped in this forgotten corner of Asia didn’t matter now.

I had fulfilled my mission. Life would continue, and no one would be the wiser. If only these individuals comprehended that we were striving to shield them—from themselves.

Just a week prior, I stood on a bridge connecting two jagged islands, watching a train that wasn’t meant to be there. Below, the ocean crashed violently against the rocks, several hundred feet beneath me.

As the amber dawn illuminated the horizon, the train slowly approached. The rain-soaked wind howled around me as I took my position in the center of the bridge. The cameras must have detected my presence by now, but it was inconsequential.

I attached the metal wedges to the tracks and moved a short distance away to ensure my safety. Crouching low, I braced against the biting wind, determined to witness the unfolding event.

The automated train, consisting of only twelve cars and no crew, was en route to the coast. Most of the cars were empty, except for the eighth one, which housed a thermonuclear warhead.

The organization behind this creation intended to conduct a deep-sea detonation, seeking to flaunt their scientific might. Unbeknownst to the scientists preparing for the test, a catastrophic fate awaited them and everyone else on the planet. Beneath their chosen test site lay a supervolcano, poised to erupt.

The planet's crust would shatter, unleashing a cataclysmic inferno that would obliterate all life. The beings inhabiting this world had not yet grasped the technological implications of their actions across the multiple layers of reality. Yet, they unwittingly wielded the power to influence realms beyond their own.

This is why I was present. Our timeline extends beyond the events transpiring on Earth. We were aware of the impending devastation; tremors reverberated through countless parallel worlds. The urgency to prevent this disaster was undeniable.

The cameras had located me. The train’s steel wheels sparked violently against its relentless course. It was too late; the engine jumped off the wedges, leading to a derailment. The metal structure trembled as the cars followed suit.

The train twisted like a ribbon in a storm as it plummeted toward the ocean. With a violent crash, it erupted into the dark, turbulent waters, consumed by the powerful currents surrounding this rocky archipelago.

The warhead was merely a complex piece of machinery until it was activated. There would be no underwater nuclear test. I gazed down at the rolling waves below, hearing the whir of helicopter blades approaching.

Time was short; I had to find a gateway. They weren’t ubiquitous, nor did they appear in the same location. I had mere minutes before they would close in on me.

And so, I sit here—a guardian of a world oblivious to the truth. I haven't uttered a word since my arrest; I knew how this story would unfold. It was just a matter of time.

The grim sound of the guard’s baton against the cell bars signaled my impending end. I could hardly wait to depart. As I shuffled down the dreary hallway, I felt the eyes of other inmates upon me, their gazes filled with the weight of approaching doom.

Turning a corner, I was ushered into a grim chamber with a solitary wooden chair, permeated with the scents of sorrow and despair. Why do they inflict such suffering on one another? This thought occupied my mind as they secured me in place, fastening a metallic device over my head. I slumped into the chair, indifferent to the fate that awaited me.

There were two methods for me to return to my realm. The first was through a gateway, but with cameras monitoring every corner of this world, escaping undetected was increasingly difficult.

The alternative was death. As this body expired, I would reemerge in my dimension, and my duty—at least for now—would be complete. The world would be safe. Had I not intervened, the annihilation of this planet would have reverberated across countless others.

The guards, satisfied with their task, retreated into a grim booth at the back of the room. A voice, likely delivering some official announcement, crackled through an aged speaker, sending an eerie echo throughout the concrete space. Then, the lights dimmed.

There would be no pain. As the lights flickered, a deep, resonating hum coursed through my being. Then, a blinding flash engulfed me. It was over. I was liberated.

Stepping out of the radiance, I reentered my world. If only Earth's inhabitants knew how narrowly they had escaped oblivion—and of the numerous times we had intervened in ways they would never comprehend. How many matches must we take from a child before they learn?

Patience is all we can request while observing life unfold on Earth. We hope that this world ascends to a better existence. Until then, we shall watch as this civilization matures into the greater cosmos it is connected to.

Chapter 2: The Consequences of Intervention

The intervention was successful, but at what cost? The echoes of my actions reverberate through the fabric of reality, shaping destinies beyond comprehension.
