Essential MacOS Apps for Developers in 2024

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction

Greetings everyone! I'm back with my latest compilation of top MacOS applications that are incredibly useful for developers. Although this list is tailored for developers, many of these apps can benefit all users. Let's dive right in!

Section 1.1: PowerMenu

PowerMenu Application Interface

The first app on my list comes highly recommended by one of my readers. Previously, I mentioned MagicMenu from IBoySoft, which enhances your right-click menu in Finder with useful options like creating new files or moving items. While it’s a great app, it requires a $20 annual subscription—which I find frustrating.

Enter PowerMenu, which offers similar features but with a more appealing user interface and a one-time payment option. I highly recommend checking it out! My favorite features include:

  • Open Folder in iTerm2
  • Convert Image
  • Edit with VSCode
  • Create New Folder

Section 1.2: Gestimer

Gestimer Timer Application

Gestimer is an incredibly straightforward app that allows you to set a timer directly from your menu bar. Simply drag down to select your desired time, and you're all set. I use it frequently to keep track of meetings or to remind myself when I'm cooking something while working. You should definitely give it a try!

Section 1.3: KeyCue

KeyCue Application Interface

I’ve been on the lookout for a replacement for CheatSheet for quite some time. While CheatSheet was useful, I encountered issues with it opening unexpectedly. KeyCue has emerged as the perfect alternative. By pressing a specific keyboard shortcut, it displays all the shortcuts available for your current app, helping you remember what to press!

Additionally, it offers quick access to your most frequently used folders and a complete emoji table for easy copying, along with a few other handy features. It's definitely worth having!

Section 1.4: ToT - The Ultimate Text Editor

ToT Text Editor Interface

ToT is the simplest text editor you could imagine. Coming from Windows, I often miss having a no-frills text editor like Notepad where I can quickly edit files in seconds. The native Text Editor on Mac tends to be a bit slow for my liking. Give it a shot and let me know your thoughts!

Section 1.5: Forklift 4

Forklift 4 Application Interface

I'm still exploring Forklift 4, but so far, I've been enjoying it quite a bit. It does require some adjustment compared to Finder, but the added functionalities are quite beneficial. Consider it as Finder with enhanced capabilities. If you replace the Finder icon in your Dock and spend some time with it, I believe you'll find it enjoyable.

This wraps up my current list, folks! I hope you found it informative. If you enjoyed this, be sure to check out my other articles linked here!
