Chapter 1: The Meaning Behind Viking Nicknames
Viking nicknames often drew inspiration from distinct physical attributes or personal traits. For instance, Eric the Red was famously recognized for his fiery hair and fiery temperament, while his son Leif was dubbed Leif the Lucky, likely due to his fortuitous nature. Similarly, Aud the Deep-Minded, a prominent Viking who relocated to Iceland following her husband’s demise in battle, received a name that reflected her profound character. While some nicknames were complimentary, others could be less so.
My understanding of Viking culture is largely rooted in Icelandic heritage, shaped by family history and travel. My mother, born in 1914, was raised in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, a community predominantly composed of Icelandic Canadians. Her father hailed from Akureyri in northern Iceland, and her maternal grandparents originated from a valley nearby.
In Wynyard, nicknames were also commonplace. For example, my grandfather, Guðmunder Guðmundsson, was affectionately called Mundi Goodman. This was a popular name, so to distinguish him, his middle name was adapted to Argyle, reflecting the rural area where he lived after his mother's passing.
From Winnipeg, I took a flight with my parents, my mom’s aunt Dorothy, and my cousin Alicyn to Reykjavik, aboard a large aircraft filled with "Western Icelanders," descendants of those who had emigrated to the U.S. and Canada.
Upon arriving in Iceland, we had the opportunity to meet relatives we had never encountered before. Their warm welcome was incredibly meaningful to my mother. One of the most memorable parts of my journey was an exceptional bus tour around the island led by a knowledgeable guide. The tour showcased breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and cultural narratives, intertwined with ancient myths, stories, and superstitions!
As a young girl, my mom learned about the Huldufólk (elves) while working in the fields with her Grandma Snjólaug. She would often say that if she listened closely enough, she could almost catch a glimpse of them. Superstitions were common among Icelanders; for instance, if my mom spilled salt, she would always toss a pinch over her left shoulder and avoided walking under ladders.
During our bus tour, we paused at a mountain pass on our way north. Our Icelandic guide encouraged everyone to write a poem and place it under a rock in a nearby cairn, to ensure a safe journey. Poetry holds a significant place in Icelandic culture. While everyone eagerly composed their poems, Alicyn and I dismissed the idea. Ironically, shortly after, I stumbled over a rock and injured my ankle, and minutes later, Alicyn accidentally stepped into a mud puddle, ruining her new white shoes. Perhaps I should have taken the poem offering more seriously!
Throughout our journey, we encountered numerous stories of Icelanders with intriguing nicknames. Their names often conveyed strength and grandeur, reminiscent of monikers like X the Magnificent, Y the Wise, or Z the Powerful.
What if we created our own Icelandic names, reflecting our best selves or aspirations? I proposed this idea to Alicyn during the trip. We could choose names that inspired more positive self-perceptions!
Given her frustration over the muddy shoe incident, I suggested "Alicyn the Adventurous" for her Icelandic name. After all, we were on an adventure, and a bit of mud is part of the experience. While she seemed indifferent, I found the name fitting!
As for myself, I pondered what name would suit me. In my 40s and at a pivotal point in my career, I grappled with self-doubt despite achieving good jobs. I often sought approval from others but feared it wasn't enough. I considered two potential Icelandic names: "Karen the Competent" or "Karen the Courageous."
The former felt more career-focused, while the latter seemed broader and more aspirational. I ultimately chose "Karen the Courageous," as it perfectly encapsulated my aspirations and resonated deeply with me!
