Breaking Free from the Chains of Perfectionism: A Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: The Perils of Perfectionism
I’ve come to realize that my relentless pursuit of perfection is hindering my progress. It’s not merely about looking or feeling flawless; it’s about executing everything flawlessly. While this mindset might seem positive initially, it’s actually stifling my growth.
Reflecting on my childhood, I never recognized this obsession with perfection. Now, however, I find myself wondering why it’s become so prevalent.
The Quest for Flawlessness
The answer is clear. Scrolling through social media often leads us to believe we need to meet unrealistic standards. We compare ourselves to curated profiles, absorbing motivational content that suggests a specific way to live. Consequently, we can easily feel disheartened when our results don’t match those we see online.
Social media presents a skewed reality; it doesn’t reveal the struggles behind the successes.
We often overlook the dedication others have invested to achieve their current status.
We may view them as fortunate or exceptionally gifted, but more frequently, the achievements we admire stem from their persistence. They stumble, learn, and rise again, consistently committing to their growth.
Chapter 2: The Impact of Perfectionism on Personal Growth
This compulsive desire for perfection is impeding my development as a writer and stalling my healing journey. As a writer, I feel pressured to craft the ideal narrative, select the perfect words, and convey my ideas flawlessly. This expectation extends beyond writing; it infiltrates my roles as a wife, mother, and daughter, where I strive to interact perfectly with my family.
Yet, there are moments when I simply don’t feel capable of that.
Embracing the Learning Journey
As someone invested in self-improvement, I recognize the need to alter my mindset. Healing from past traumas is essential, but my perfectionist tendencies keep me from progressing. This constant self-criticism breeds resentment, hindering my ability to move forward.
I must frequently remind myself that learning is an ongoing process. Each new endeavor requires practice to become proficient. While it may seem daunting, it’s just work that necessitates repetition. With time, I will improve and find ease in my efforts.
I’ve decided to apply this perspective to my self-growth journey. Instead of chastising myself for what I haven’t accomplished, I will remind myself that perfection is unnecessary. Whether in my family life, career, or health, I will acknowledge that I’m doing my best in the moment. The next time, I can strive for improvement, and eventually, success will follow.
Why do we impose such high standards upon ourselves? The notion that we must be “Super Person” merely to be deemed acceptable is a heavy burden.
