Achieving $100K as a Freelancer: My Journey to Success

Written on

Chapter 1: My Freelance Beginnings

My journey to securing quality freelance work was far from an overnight success.

I started my freelance career in 2011, initially spending a year on Freelancer.com tackling small JavaScript and CSS projects. In September 2012, I transitioned to Upwork, where I found significantly better opportunities. My first project on this platform marked the beginning of my upward trajectory.

Humble Beginnings

In the early days, I took on various small projects to gain experience and expand my client network. I would modify a website's landing page one day, resolve database issues the next, and spend the following week on API integrations.

Building Versatility

This approach yielded several benefits:

  1. Broadened Skill Set: Gaining a wide range of experiences made me more adaptable and equipped to tackle unfamiliar challenges. I recommend reading "Range" by David Epstein for insights into skill development.
  2. Expanded Network: While a single long-term project might pay as much as multiple short-term ones, the latter significantly enhances your network. Twelve satisfied clients are more valuable than one, as they may rehire you, recommend you, or provide industry insights when needed.

Although managing numerous clients can be exhausting, this strategy can organically generate new opportunities. You can always choose to specialize later, whether it's in a specific niche, technology, or even a major client.

Client Satisfaction is Key

The crucial takeaway is to ensure clients are consistently pleased with your work. Aim to be the first person they think of for new projects or when they receive inquiries for recommendations. Always strive to exceed expectations.

Chapter 2: The Importance of Peer Networks

Your network of peers is just as vital as your client connections.

Peers can include teammates, industry contacts on social media, or companies offering complementary services.

Real-Life Examples

  • Example 1: My reputation as a freelancer led a web development agency to approach me with a proposal: I would refer clients to them, and in return, I would receive a percentage of their lifetime earnings from those clients. This arrangement thrived on mutual trust and communication.
  • Example 2: Later, when the same agency had a client looking for a senior Laravel developer, they contacted me — a choice driven by the trust established in our earlier collaboration.

Every interaction you have has the potential to create a positive ripple effect throughout your career.

Be Generous with Your Peers

Always be willing to support your peers. Fair compensation for subcontractors, assisting team members, and going the extra mile to help others recover from mistakes fosters reliability and builds strong partnerships.

The Path to My $100K Client

Earnings per client often follow a Pareto distribution. Between 2011 and 2019, my two largest clients contributed about $40,000 each, while the next four brought in around $20,000 each. Most clients, however, generated less than $10,000 — many even less than $1,000.

So, how did I land a client worth over $100,000? The answer lies in the combination of principles discussed here.

In 2016, a client from the stock market sector found me through my public freelance portfolio. After successfully completing a one-time project, we parted ways on good terms. A year later, they contacted me with a question, and I offered a complimentary consultation. This experience, alongside my own efforts in the stock market, led to a side project in 2018.

While that project didn’t yield financial success, I showcased it in my portfolio and informed my developer friends about it. In early 2020, one of those friends was approached by a client seeking a stock market analysis platform. Although they couldn't take on the project, they recommended me due to our past collaborations.

When the client reached out, I remembered my earlier connection with the 2016 client and asked for a referral. The result? I stood out among other candidates and secured a client that many freelancers dream of landing.

Conclusion: A Journey of Steady Growth

While my story may seem like a series of fortunate events, it was a culmination of the principles I've shared. You cannot control fate, but each action you take can tilt the odds in your favor.

True success does not happen overnight, except perhaps for lottery winners. In reality, we build our success progressively, one step at a time, through every interaction and project we undertake.

Being fair and striving for excellence in every project is the most dependable path to freelancing success.
