# Overcoming Resistance: The Hidden Challenges Before Success

Chapter 1: The Nature of Resistance
In just a week, I will embark on a Vision Quest—a four-day solitary experience in a wilderness inhabited by bears, mountain lions, and wolves. During this time, I will have no food, minimal water, no sleep, and no electronic devices, confined to a four-foot by four-foot space. This has been a lifelong aspiration of mine, yet just a few days ago, I found myself on the verge of withdrawing from this journey.
Prior to the Vision Quest, we participate in a Sweat Lodge Ceremony approximately every two weeks. Unfortunately, the final ceremony had to be rescheduled multiple times due to conflicts among the participants. When I reached out to the organizer for the latest date, he revealed that he too felt a significant resistance to the entire Vision Quest concept. His reluctance mirrored my own, amplifying my inner turmoil.
As the date approached, my anxiety surged. I considered postponing, but to my dismay, the Vision Quest was only nine days away. In a moment of vulnerability, I contacted the facilitators, expressing my concerns indirectly while attempting to shift blame to others. I suggested that perhaps it wasn't wise to proceed if many participants might back out.
Their response was enlightening: spirituality is a personal journey, they said, and they would hold the ceremony regardless of attendance. This was not what my ego wanted to hear.
Section 1.1: The Voices Within
The following day, while traveling to the ceremonial grounds with a fellow participant, I candidly shared my feelings of anxiety. To my relief, he admitted he felt the same way. Together, we discussed the two conflicting voices in our minds: one insisting this wasn’t the right time, while the other urged us to commit. Deciphering which voice was genuine felt like navigating a moral dilemma.
Articulating my fears allowed a shift in my perspective. I realized that the voice discouraging me was rooted in anxiety, which had intensified as the Vision Quest approached. This voice, I recognized, was my ego attempting to maintain its hold, fearful of the transformative nature of this journey.
Reflecting on my past attempts to undertake a Vision Quest revealed a pattern. I had backed out several times, often succumbing to distractions and opting for easier, more enjoyable alternatives. Each time, I later found myself regretting the missed opportunity.
Section 1.2: Understanding Resistance
It wasn’t until I delved into Steven Pressfield's book The War of Art that I discovered a name for this opposing force: Resistance. It exists in everyone and serves to thwart our endeavors, keeping us tethered to our lesser selves. Notably, Resistance is most potent as we near completion.
Pressfield illustrates this through a tale from The Odyssey. As Odysseus and his crew neared home, he succumbed to sleep, only for one crew member to unleash a bag of winds, sending them back to the start of their journey. The lesson? Resistance intensifies at the finish line; vigilance is essential.
Chapter 2: The Subtlety of Resistance
Resistance employs clever tactics. It doesn’t confront head-on; rather, it sneaks in and undermines our efforts quietly. It never directly told me that the Vision Quest was insignificant—such overt dismissal would have been too obvious. Instead, it suggested postponements and questioned my commitment, all while masking its true intentions.
As the days dwindle down to the Quest, I remain cautious, determined not to fall prey to Resistance's deceptive strategies.
The first video titled "Steven Pressfield: Overcoming Resistance & Why Talent Doesn't Matter" provides insights into the challenges of overcoming internal barriers and emphasizes the importance of persistence in achieving one's goals.
In the second video, "How to Beat Resistance and Get It Done, with Steven Pressfield - Terri Cole," practical strategies are discussed to combat Resistance and maintain focus on personal aspirations.
A Quick Reflection
If you find yourself grappling with significant Resistance, take it as a sign that you are nearing your goal.
