Navigating Career Growth: The Case for Staying Put

Written on

Chapter 1: The Value of Job Mastery

Improving your skills in your current position often paves the way for lasting success in your career. In contrast, those who jump from one job to another at every opportunity may not see the same results.

As the job market offers higher salaries, flexible work arrangements, and remote options, it's tempting to leave your current role behind. However, if your situation isn't dire, it might be wise to consider staying where you are for a bit longer. Your decision should center on whether you seek mere advancement or genuine improvement in your profession, as these goals do not always align.

Focusing on skill enhancement often leads to sustainable success, unlike those who chase after new positions at the first sign of opportunity. In fact, taking on a bigger role elsewhere can sometimes hinder your effectiveness.

Why does this happen?

Success in any field requires more than just knowledge in a specific area.

Section 1.1: Understanding the Bigger Picture

For professionals, particularly in law, effectiveness is tied to much more than just legal expertise. While understanding the law is crucial, what truly distinguishes exceptional in-house counsel is their ability to help their organization achieve its strategic goals. This involves identifying and managing relevant risks effectively.

Subsection 1.1.1: Grasping Business Objectives

Insight into business objectives for effective legal counsel

To excel, you need to comprehend your company's objectives from a business standpoint. This can be challenging for legal professionals as it requires a shift from a legal perspective to one that resembles a business administration mindset. Colleagues in business have various priorities, some critical and others less so. Without understanding the significance of these projects, it's difficult to assess risks effectively.

Section 1.2: Staying Informed

How do you determine what could potentially lead to issues for your company? Regulatory bodies often provide clues through their rule-making pace and public statements. Politicians also influence this landscape by applying pressure on regulators. If you’re fortunate, you might witness other industry players face scrutiny before it reaches your organization.

Chapter 2: Building Strong Relationships

The video "Sit Down Beside Me" delves into the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving success in any role. It highlights how strong relationships can enhance your effectiveness at work.

Effective collaboration is essential since your ability to accomplish tasks is limited as an individual. In the legal field, working well with others is even more crucial, as you often need colleagues to align with your objectives. This can be particularly challenging when your priorities conflict with their interests.

You want sales teams to consider contract terms, even if it slows the acquisition of new clients. All employees must adhere to legal requirements, which can add to their daily workload. Building relationships is key; when senior management understands and supports your legal objectives, they are more likely to assist in realizing them.

The video "She & Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" explores themes of commitment and perseverance, mirroring the idea of staying in a role to develop professionally.

Chapter 3: Continuous Growth in Your Current Role

Throughout my two decades in the workforce, I consistently improved my skills. Each year brought new insights into my company and its operations. With every relationship I nurtured, my influence expanded. The satisfaction derived from witnessing the outcomes of long-term effort cannot be understated.

Consider those who frequently change jobs. Even if they remain within the same industry, they often find themselves novices in crucial areas related to their new organization. Understanding the history behind current strategies, internal dynamics, and key influences takes time.

The allure of a new title and better pay can blind many to the challenges and risks associated with starting fresh in a new environment. Although some individuals thrive in new roles immediately, they are the exception rather than the rule.

For the majority, reflecting on your effectiveness in your current job may inspire you to remain a little longer. Choosing to stay where you excel is a sign of good judgment and courage, not a retreat.

Be well.

  • This reflection is one I wish I could have shared with every colleague considering leaving the company over the years. Better late than never.
