Chapter 1: Embracing Change in Career Paths

Six months ago, I held the position of lead designer for a luxury home remodeling company. However, I was unexpectedly let go amidst a challenging economic climate characterized by rising interest rates. Surprisingly, unlike previous instances of unemployment, I didn’t feel my self-esteem plummet. In a society that often equates identity with professional status, it's easy to forget the intrinsic value of our true selves beyond our careers.

During my time as a digital nomad, I connected deeply with my authentic self, embarking on a long-term quest to master the Finnish language. This language became a source of solace during difficult moments; whenever a client meeting went awry or a job opportunity slipped away, all I needed was to tune into a Finnish podcast for just 15 minutes to regain my optimism. We all harbor passions like this, yet we often suppress them due to societal expectations. By the age of 32, I had faced enough professional hurdles to recognize that fully committing to learning Finnish was essential for a fulfilling life.

My dishwashing job came into play as a necessity at first. The worst decision one can make is to remain idle; if a job offer arose later, I needed to ensure I could afford relocation. Choosing not to act is still a choice, and often leads to unfavorable outcomes. I took on a seasonal role over the summer, followed by another similar position.

The downsides of earning slightly less and engaging in manual labor are insignificant compared to the burdens associated with "prestige." Roles that come with titles, like department chair or lead designer, entail a plethora of additional meetings and networking responsibilities. From lunch events to obtaining extra certifications and attending trade shows, prestige seeps into every facet of life. Reflecting on my previous high-paying job, I recall feeling trapped both geographically and professionally. Now, working in a seasonal kitchen role offers me much greater social mobility.

Dishwashing is often overlooked, yet it stands as one of the most underrated jobs available. It’s quite challenging to face criticism in this role. If you simply show up, maintain a steady pace, and ensure the dishes are spotless, you’ll likely go unnoticed. Taking the extra step to clean details during quieter times can elevate you to the top tier of employees. Gone are the days of meticulously proofreading client emails or juggling early morning house visits and back-to-back sales calls. In the design industry, it’s tough to unwind at home, as the mind is constantly preoccupied with client floor plans.

One of the greatest advantages of dishwashing is the ability to listen to podcasts with an earbud in. During an 8-hour shift, I can accumulate about 6 hours of quality Finnish listening time. I find I focus much better on my Finnish podcasts and Harry Potter audiobooks while washing dishes than I do when sitting idle at home. My strategy is to read the podcast subtitles beforehand, so when I’m on the job, the material is already familiar, allowing me to intuitively pick up new vocabulary through context.

In my former role as lead designer, I could manage only 2–3 hours of Finnish immersion daily. Now, I consistently enjoy 6 hours while still having time for other life pursuits. It feels like I’m being compensated to learn a language. I’m reaching new levels of comprehension every three weeks, compared to the previous rate of every month and a half. At some point in life, you’ll choose to reorganize everything around your primary passion. For me, that passion is mastering Finnish.
