Chapter 1: The Power of Reflection
Writers often possess some of the most dynamic and engaged minds within our society. While there are certainly exceptions to this rule, many of us have found a shortcut to generating fresh stories.
What are the gaps? What is absent? What underlying issues are being overlooked? Is there a message that remains unspoken?
This inquiry has been a constant presence on my computer ever since I embarked on launching a casualty insurance firm from the ground up. I had little knowledge about the insurance landscape and no prior experience in the industry. However, I did have a robust business strategy and a chairman who was also the CEO of a publicly traded insurance firm—an invaluable resource. I surrounded myself with skilled professionals in casualty insurance. Before long, I began to notice certain disconnects between our clients and the services we provided to insurers and reinsurers. This compelling notion—"What Are The Voids?"—became a recurring theme in my thoughts.
Every presentation I attended, every new hire I made, and every client-focused initiative I developed brought this question to the forefront of my mind, often keeping me awake at night.
During a Casualty Insurance CEO conference, while engaging in a roundtable discussion on improving client support, one CEO remarked, "I hear there’s a question that troubles you. Is that correct?" I affirmed, "Yes, and I believe it's a constructive concern."
As a Writer
I joined Medium in October 2021, not yet considering myself a writer. A mentor I deeply respect encouraged me by saying, "Why do you think you can't write? DR, you've composed thousands of emails, brochures, and proposals globally; what holds you back from writing?"
The influence of those we admire can be transformative. My high school English teacher, Mr. Wilson (R.I.P.), and my English 101 professor, Mr. Bryant (R.I.P.), both expressed that it was commendable for me to explore various paths beyond writing. This sentiment lingered in my mind with each piece I crafted.
Today, my writing journey has taken me to unexpected places. I have authored several books and co-created a children’s book featuring an enchanting character.
Furthermore, I am in the process of launching additional writing projects that will eventually evolve into businesses. I anticipate these endeavors will capture the interest of those who know me and my partner here on Medium. I am eager to share more when the time is right.
Use Case
The phrase "What are the voids?" has propelled me into a new phase of life. At seventy-five, I sold my last company; now, at seventy-seven, I am envisioning two, maybe three startups, all revolving around writing. The best part? I'm genuinely enjoying the journey.
Thank You
Having read countless stories on Medium, I have rekindled my speed-reading skills. Your contributions have greatly enriched my experience. In every narrative, conversation, or article I encounter, I always consider, "What are the voids?"
I am confident that incorporating this phrase into your reflections will yield profound impacts on your life, as it does in relationships.
