Discovering Alicante: A Spontaneous Coastal Adventure

Chapter 1: A Serendipitous Journey Begins
Alicante, nestled in the beautiful Valencian community, is just a quick train ride from Madrid thanks to Spain's efficient high-speed rail system. Since relocating to this stunning country three years ago, I’ve found it to be my go-to seaside getaway.
My initial visit to Alicante occurred last summer, when a good friend and I attended the annual Hogueras de San Juan de Alicante festival, which marks the longest day of the year. The term “Hoguera” in Valencian translates to “bonfire,” a fitting description of the week-long festivities that engulf the city. Elaborate statues populate the streets, symbolizing aspects of the previous year to be left behind.
At the week's conclusion, these creations are set ablaze before enthusiastic crowds. Firefighting teams stand by with hoses, often resulting in a playful soaking for onlookers, reminiscent of childhood water fights.
This recent trip to Alicante was sparked by an impromptu chat with the same friend over coffee at a charming terrace in Madrid. After returning from London, I was eager for some sun and sea. We decided on a quick overnight adventure, squeezing in two full days of fun.
Chapter 2: Fun in the Sun
Upon arrival, we headed straight for the beach after our two-hour AVE train ride, meeting up with friends I had made during the Hogueras festival the previous year. We chose a “cala,” or cove, to celebrate a friend's birthday. The water was stunningly clear—until jellyfish made an appearance! Fortunately, in Alicante, jellyfish tend to float near the surface, allowing us to spot them from a distance.
We quickly altered our course back to shore after spotting one while swimming out to the buoys. It was a close call, and I was relieved to avoid my first jellyfish sting.
The following day, we strolled through the city from our hotel, located on the whimsically dubbed “calle de las setas,” or “mushroom street.”
One of the highlights of Alicante is its tram system, which keeps the beaches less congested. The trams run along the coast, allowing easy access to various scenic beaches, promoting a more relaxed atmosphere.
On our second day, we soaked in the sun on the beach, enjoying one of the best swims of my life. The gentle waves were perfect for body surfing and jumping. I was surrounded by people of all ages and backgrounds, which adds to the sea's charm; it truly is an inclusive space. I left Alicante feeling rejuvenated and eager for more ocean adventures. With some days off next week and my trips to Morocco and Southern Spain still unplanned, I’m excited to see where my journey takes me next…
