Chapter 1: The Unanswered Question

The realm of Physical Sciences has long grappled with a profound inquiry: What triggered the Big Bang? While it may be posited as a solid theory, a definitive cause remains elusive.

I recall a comic by Wiley Miller (or at least I believe it was his work): a young speaker enthusiastically engages an audience, gesturing towards an elaborate whiteboard filled with an intricate flow chart of shapes and lines. This elaborate diagram attempts to unravel a complex process, its boxes and circles interconnected in a labyrinthine fashion.

Upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that every line ultimately converges on a central box labeled “AMH,” which stands prominently at the heart of the chart. A footnote at the bottom reads: “A Miracle Happens.”

This raises the question: is this merely a whimsical take on logic, or does it reveal a deeper truth?

I often find myself pondering similar thoughts regarding Physical Sciences. It feels as though they are navigating through an expansive flow chart that, after extensive exploration, leads us to one of two conclusions: either (a) everything that exists is eternal, with matter and energy having no beginning, or (b) everything originated from nothing, implying that a miracle has occurred.

However, miracles don’t typically align with scientific principles, leading to their dismissal. Yet, science continues its methodical quest, addressing one challenging problem after another (like enhancing cellphone battery life) and tackling complex questions (such as the size of molecules, which Schrödinger addresses in “What is Life?”). Yet, the ultimate question persists: Who or what initiated the Big Bang?

Did a miracle take place? Or are the Upanishads onto something profound, suggesting it’s all a manifestation of Maya? Perhaps it’s a grand illusion crafted by Brahman, an intricate dream involving a detailed whiteboard with a central box marked “AMH.”
